Counting with Pom Poms

We have been focusing a lot on numbers 1-10 and numeracy this past week. O is really good at counting and can count to ten and above along with counting out objects to a certain number but we haven’t done that much work on written numbers. Today we have been learning to recognise the written number (1-10) and count out pom poms to a certain number.

I set this really simple activity up for O whilst he was finishing his breakfast. It took only a couple of minutes to set-up and can be set-up at all times somewhere in the house. To make it a little more exciting you can change the pom poms to some different objects every few days. You could use buttons, pasta shells, beads, rocks, shells, stones, bottle tops/lids etc.

I have kept this activity at O’s crafts table and I keep finding him sitting down (quietly!!) counting to himself placing the pom poms in to the cupcake cases. Very cute!

What you need:

Cupcake cases
Pen
Pom poms

What we did:

Using a black marker I wrote the numbers 1-10 on to ten cupcake cases.
I collected some pom poms and placed them onto a small tray along with the cupcake cases.
I explained our activity to O and we practised looking at the written number and saying it aloud.
O then started adding the pom poms starting with the number 1 up to 10.
We then mixed things up a little and I pulled out random cupcake cases with numbers on to see if O could remember the written number.
O then wanted to sort the pom poms into colours, so we also got to practice our colours too!
