I spend a lot of my spare time on Pinterest looking for different recipes and snack ideas and as soon as I came across Love to be in the Kitchen’s recipe for Graham Crackers I knew I had to start making them straight away!
O loves biscuits and crackers and it is the one snack he asks for every day, shame it isn’t fruit or vegetables! But these homemade graham crackers are much better than store bought, and you can even make them healthier by adding some flax seeds or wheatgerm! And they are SO easy to make! It is simply mixing the ingredients together and cutting out some shapes! You could make a range of different shapes with these crackers or simply just cut out some squares or rectangles. We used a teddy bear, star and heart cutter.
Oscar loved making these crackers and it was so simple that he could do most of the steps himself. He enjoyed pouring the different ingredients into the mixer and of course the best bit, cutting out the shapes!
1 cup wholewheat flour
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup dark brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup butter, chilled and cubed
1/4 cup honey
1 teaspoon vanilla
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- In a food processor or mixer combine the two flours, sugar, salt, cinnamon and baking soda.
- Add the cubed and chilled butter to the food processor and mix until it resembles coarse meal.
- Add the honey, water and vanilla and continue to mix until it all combines.
- Remove and shape the dough onto a flat surface and roll out to 1/4 inch thick. Cut out desired shapes using a cookie cutter or knife. (you can use a variety of shapes or just simply cut into squares).
- Place dough shapes onto parchment paper and bake for 15 minutes.
- Cool and serve.
*These cookies can also be frozen before being baked at another time. Just place the cut-out cookie shapes onto a baking sheet in the freezer for 20 minutes before placing in a ziploc bag. Once ready to bake, just place on some parchment paper and add an extra couple of minutes to the baking time. Can be frozen for up to 4 months. We have some in our freezer but we haven’t baked them yet so cannot comment on whether the taste is different or not.
